The right paint depends on the surface, the existing coating, exposure to weather and how the area will be used. Choose the coating system first, then the colour and finish. A wall, a timber fence and a metal garage door can share a colour without needing the same paint.

Start with the surface and its condition

List what you are painting: plasterboard, timber, brick, render or metal. Note flaking areas, stains, previous repairs and moisture problems. A sound painted wall presents a different job from bare timber or a glossy old door. The primer, preparation and topcoat must work together on that particular surface.

Before buying paint for an exterior, check the manufacturer’s current product instructions for the substrate and existing finish. A recognisable brand or a premium price does not make every product suitable for every job.

What should you check for each project?

  • Interior walls: everyday cleaning needs, room use and the condition of existing paint.
  • Doors and trims: handling, cleaning and compatibility with the previous coating.
  • Timber fences: timber condition, existing paint or stain, weather exposure and the appearance you want.
  • Brick and render: surface condition and any unresolved moisture or cracking.
  • Metal: the type of metal, corrosion and a compatible preparation and coating system.

Choose the sheen for the room, not just the sample

Consider how light falls across the surface and how often you will clean it. A bedroom wall and a busy hallway may have different priorities. Look at the product’s intended use and cleaning guidance rather than choosing on the finish name alone. Our room-by-room paint finish guide explores this decision in more detail.

A real example: a charcoal timber fence

Fix Home’s fence work includes a project in Dulux Monument, a dark charcoal colour. The colour choice is one part of the decision: the timber still needs a suitable exterior coating system. In a garden, assess the sample beside plants, paving and brickwork, in both sun and shade. A screen image is a starting point, not an exact prediction of the finished colour.

Why a professional can make a difference

A professional painter can inspect the existing surface, identify preparation needs and explain a suitable specification before work begins. This is particularly valuable when several materials meet or old coatings have failed. Ask your painter to name the proposed products and finish in the quote, and clarify what repairs are included.

Questions to answer before requesting a quote

  1. Which surfaces and rooms need painting?
  2. Is this a repaint, bare surface or change from stain to paint?
  3. Are there leaks, flaking areas or damaged boards?
  4. What colour and finish are you considering?
  5. Will the property stay occupied during the work?
