Dulux Monument is a dark charcoal colour, rather than a pure black. It can be an option for a garden boundary when you want a darker backdrop. Whether it suits your fence depends on neighbouring materials, light and the condition of the timber—not simply how it looks online.

A real Fix Home fence example

One of our Bayside fence projects used Dulux paint in Monument. It provides a practical example of choosing a darker fence colour as part of an outdoor scheme. You can explore our real project gallery for fence and exterior work around the area.

The lesson is to assess the whole setting. A long boundary has more visual impact than a small colour chip. Look at the fence beside the house, paving, planting and any adjoining structures before deciding.

Is Monument black or grey?

Dulux identifies Monument as dark charcoal. Its apparent colour can change with daylight and the colours surrounding it. Test an actual sample in the intended setting and view it at different times of day. Do not rely on a phone display as a precise colour match.

Which paint should you use on a timber fence?

Monument is the colour, not a complete paint specification. A timber fence needs a product and preparation method suitable for the timber and any existing finish. A metal fence needs a different assessment. Ask for the product name and sheen as well as the colour; these determine how the coating should be applied and maintained.

What should be checked before painting?

  • Loose, rotten or damaged boards that may need repair before coating.
  • Existing paint, stain or other treatment and its condition.
  • Surface contamination and moisture.
  • Access to edges, gaps and both sides where relevant.
  • Protection for garden beds, glass, paving and neighbouring property.

These are checks to make for a new project, not a claim that every listed treatment was needed on our example fence. The preparation and number of coats should follow the selected product’s instructions and the assessed surface.

Why choose a professional for fence painting?

Long fences can be awkward to coat consistently, especially beside planting or shared boundaries. A professional can plan access, agree the surfaces included, protect nearby areas and select an appropriate application method. Spraying is not automatically suitable for every site; overspray protection and the surroundings matter.

How do you care for a painted fence?

Follow the chosen coating’s cleaning and curing guidance. Check periodically for damaged timber or deteriorating paint, and address the cause before touching it up. Keep irrigation from repeatedly soaking the fence where practical. A repaint interval should be assessed from condition and exposure rather than promised as a fixed number of years.
