Choose paint when an opaque colour is the priority; consider a suitable stain when you want the timber’s appearance to remain part of the design. Existing coatings, timber condition and the selected product can limit the options. There is no universal winner for every fence.
How do you want the fence to look?
A painted fence creates a more uniform colour backdrop. A penetrating or translucent stain may reveal more of the grain, while opaque stains can give a different result. Read the product description rather than assuming every stain is transparent. Consider your house, paving and garden together.
Fix Home’s Dulux Monument fence project is a painted, dark-charcoal example. It shows one colour direction, not a rule that every garden should have a dark fence. See our project gallery for real fence work.
Can you change an already painted fence to stain?
A translucent stain will not reveal natural grain through an existing opaque paint film. Removing that coating can be a substantial job and may not be practical on rough or damaged boards. Likewise, painting over a previous stain requires checking its type, condition and compatibility. Explain the current finish to your painter before requesting a price.
Compare the options before deciding
- Appearance: uniform colour versus the amount of timber character you want to retain.
- Existing coating: what can remain and what must be removed or prepared.
- Timber condition: damaged boards may need repair or replacement regardless of finish.
- Upkeep: check the individual product’s maintenance instructions.
- Access: plants, slopes, neighbouring boundaries and narrow gaps affect the work.
Does paint or stain last longer?
A fair answer depends on the product, preparation, exposure and how the fence is maintained. Do not compare two generic labels as if they were identical specifications. Ask what deterioration to look for and how future maintenance would be carried out. No finish turns damaged or persistently wet timber into a sound surface.
Why a professional assessment helps
A professional can check the existing finish, discuss realistic colour options and identify repair or access issues before the job starts. This can prevent ordering a finish that will not produce the appearance you expected. Request a written scope covering the faces, edges, gates and rails included.
What should you send with a fence-painting enquiry?
Provide approximate length and height, clear photos, your suburb, the current finish and whether one or both sides need work. Mention plants close to the boards and any shared-boundary access. Photographs help with initial discussion; a site assessment may still be needed.
